Keown Blasts Arsenal Star Who Was “Taking Liberties” In Olympiakos Defeat

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has criticised Gunners keeper Bernd Leno for his part in Olympiakos’s extra-time winner in the Europa League last night.

The German gave away a needless corner late on in the game when he took too long to clear the ball upfield. The Gunners cleared the resulting delivery from the set-piece but the clearance only led to another cross from which Youssef El-Arabi scored the vital winner.

Keown has singled out Leno for making the mistake and criticised the lack of professionalism that was on show:

“The commitment wasn’t there from the off. It was an unprofessional performance and Arteta will be looking at it and thinking where does he go from here. Leno was taking liberties. It was an unprofessional performance and Arteta will be looking at it and thinking where does he go from here.”

“It’s going to be very difficult to make the Champions League now. It really hurts us and there was a lot of anger around at the end. Arteta now has to build this club back up again. Almost every single player could have done more.”

As Keown says, qualifying for the Champions League through the league is not going to be easy. The Gunners are currently seven points off Chelsea in fourth place.

Manchester City’s European ban does offer manager Mikel Arteta some hope, though, as fifth place could be enough if UEFA’s sanctions are not overturned. Even so, they are still four points off Manchester United and they also have Tottenham, Sheffield United and Wolves ahead of them in the table.
