Recently-signed Arsenal star Kai Havertz spoke about the trials and tribulations he has faced since making the jump to North London from Chelsea in an interview with Sport 1 [via Arsenal Buzz on Twitter].

In the interview, he claims that his middling form at Arsenal is just a ‘phase’ and he has accused fans of only seeing the ‘negative’ side to his performances.

He is not phased by his mediocre start to life at the Emirates Stadium, saying that he is trying to ‘approach it in a relaxed manner’.

What did Kai Havertz say in the interview?

In the interview, Havertz said: “Sure, things like that keep you busy. But I’ve often had a phase and that you often only see the negative. It’s not the first club where I’m starting over.

“Of course, you want to be successful as quickly as possible, but I know that there are phases like that. I try to approach it in a relaxed manner.”

Can Kai Havertz be a success at Arsenal?

At this stage, it is difficult to say – as such, we should be careful not to cast judgement so quickly. Nevertheless, we can still make predictions on how Havertz’s Arsenal career will pan out.

First and foremost, the German international must nail down a position that he feels most comfortable in. Naturally, he plays as a number ten, but Mikel Arteta’s system does not accommodate this role.

He started in Arsenal’s last fixture, when they defeated Manchester United by a score of 3-1 – in that game, Havertz was deployed in the central midfield role, alongside Martin Odegaard.

While the Gunners put in a solid performance en route to overcoming the Red Devils, Havertz’s individual performance was mediocre at best. It was perhaps best characterised by him missing a gilt-edged chance in the first half, where he missed the ball entirely in an attempt to hammer it into the back of the net.

However, we feel that he could still grow into this role. He is not the most energetic of midfielders, but his passing is excellent – he can open up a defensive line with relative ease using his natural creativity.
