Journalist Reveals Arsenal Are “In Pole Position” To Secure 53M Summer Transfer

Arsenal are in “pole position” to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer, according to Spanish journalist Eugenio Mateo Serrano.

Barcelona are also known to be keen admirers of the 24-year-old, with the club looking to replace Sergio Busquets, but Serrano says the Gunners are favourites, with the player keen on a switch to England:

“Xavi needs another player instead of Busquets. The number one pick is Martín Zubimendi, from Real Sociedad. But it’s also difficult because Zubimendi wants to play in the Premier League and, for me, Arsenal are in pole position.”

There were reports that Mikel Arteta’s side were willing to trigger Zubimendi’s €60m (£53m) release clause during the January transfer window, but the Spaniard wanted to remain with Real Sociedad until the end of the season.

However, it appears that the midfielder will be very much open to a transfer in the summer, with Arsenal seemingly in the lead to secure his services.

Zubimendi is an anchor man, who dictates play from a deep-lying position, so he would probably line up alongside Thomas Partey in midfield if he were to make the move to London.
