Journalist Provides Key Update On Arsenal’s £25m Move For Dutch Ace

Arsenal’s interest in Ajax winger Quincy Promes is not concrete and is likely being manufactured by agents trying to drum up interest in the Dutch international, according to Mike Verweij.

The journalist, who works as the Ajax correspondent for national newspaper De Telegraaf believes the Gunners are not currently looking to sign the 28-year-old, although that may change in the coming weeks:

“I’ve read the rumour about Promes and Arsenal too. In London, they say it is mainly the trick of his agents to market him well. Maybe it will play [out] but, at the moment, that is not concrete.”

Last week, reports emerged that Arsenal were weighing up a possible £25m offer for Promes, with head coach Mikel Arteta said to be keen on strengthening his options in wide areas.

However, such a sizeable bid for a winger always seemed unlikely, considering the club’s limited transfer budget and their priorities in terms of the positions they are looking to strengthen.

Promes is certainly a talented player, having scored 16 goals in 28 games for Ajax last season, but Verweij’s comments suggest a move to the Emirates is unlikely at this stage.
