Journalist lifts the lid on Arsenal’s transfer misery

Arsenal have had a woeful summer when it comes to players wanting to leave the club. A number of stars are nearing the end of their contacts at the club, and several more have expressed their desire to leave.

To add insult to injury, BBC journalist David Ornstein has claimed that there are even more stars wanting to leave the club than meets the eye, sighting right-back Hector Bellerin as yet another Gunner looking for the exit door.

Of course, it was reported earlier in the summer that Bellerin was a target of his former club Barcelona. However there was no indication that the defender was trying to force a move away. But during a Q&A on Twitter, Ornstein said that the Spanish U21 international had asked Wenger to leave the club after the U21 Euros.

He said: “Arsenal encountered problems with some of those they did not want to lose. For example, Hector Bellerin returned from the U21 Euros to tell Wenger he wanted to leave amid interest from Barcelona.”

Ornstein then went on to talk about Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s exit to Liverpool, saying the winger rejected a new deal at the club worth up to £180,000 a week.

“Oxlade-Chamberlain rejected a new deal and eventually told Wenger he wanted out.”

“He [Wenger] was stunned and bitterly disappointed when Oxlade-Chamberlain rejected the club’s final contract offer (an enormous pay rise that would have earned him close to £180,000 per week if Arsenal made it back into the Champions League).”

“And I’m told Wenger did not hold back when Oxlade-Chamberlain told him face-to-face that he wanted to move on.”

“Oxlade-Chamberlain’s price was an initial £35m, while money also came in for Szczesny, Gabriel and Gibbs.”

“On the face of it that left Arsenal in profit for the window, although it is unclear if or how much of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s fee was owed to his former club Southampton via a sell-on clause.”

The BBC journalist also talked about the contract situations of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. Whilst it is clear Alexis Sanchez wants to leave the club, it is unclear where the club stand with Ozil – but Ornstein says the club have not held talks with the German since March.

“No contract talks took place place with Ozil and have not since March and Sanchez also made clear his desire to exit the Emirates.”
