Joel Campbell Transfer Dropped By Benfica At The Last Minute

Wenger will have to make room for Campbell who was close to signing with Benfica during the last day of the transfer window. The deal did not go through due to the fact that the Portuguese side refused to meet the Gunners’ financial expectations who asked for £9.5million. According to Metro, Benfica refused to pay that much and stuck to their initial offer of £7.9million. Unfortunately for Campbell, his chances of making the first team are very low considering the fact that Wenger was keen to send him away for the 4th consecutive season.

Despite having a great World Cup and also a great year with Olympiacos, seemingly Campbell is still not good enough in Wenger’s mind to compete with Sanchez and Walcott who will have to battle it out for a right winger spot. With Welbeck joining the North Londoners it is close to impossible for the Costa Rican forward to finally make a name for himself at the Emirates.

Unfortunately for the 22 year old, the transfer window closed and now he will probably wait until January to try and find a team for which he can perform on a regular basis. With his contract set to expire in 2016, it is a bit hard to believe that Arsenal will keep him around until the end of it. Even though he made Arsenal a lot of money through the fees other teams paid to bring him on loan, Campbell has failed to impress Wenger enough to become a team regular which is surprising given his performances on the World stage.
