Is Wenger Ready To Break The Bank For Jovetic?

Arsenal have endured their worst start ever to a Premier League season under Arsene Wenger and although they have recovered in the League, some Arsenal fans have been calling for Wenger’s head, unsurprisingly frustrated at the lack of trophies and the inability to retain top players. This has resulted in them slipping out of the top 4 this season and unless they can overturn a 3-1 deficit against Bayern Munich in two weeks, they are bound to finish the season empty-handed.

Having announced cash reserves in excess of £123 million this past week, the Arsenal Supporter’s Trust (AST) views this summer transfer window as an opportunity to spend big and re-establish themselves in the upper echelons of domestic and European football.

Could Wenger be set to appease the fans by breaking the bank for Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates in the past. While many would argue that Arsenal’s frailties lie in their defending, their attacking threat has been toned down significantly following the acrimonious departure of club captain Robin Van Persie to rivals Manchester United.

“Attack is the best form of Defense.” This strategy certainly applies to Arsenal as they defend the best when they are actually attacking and have the ball in the opposition’s half. Against the so-called big teams in this past January, Arsenal started slowly and hardly threatened the top positions in the League, collecting a meagre 1 point from a possible 9 against Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool.

And Wenger believes next season could very well be a make or break season for the Gunners and is prepared to invest heavily. Arsenal are rumoured to be monitoring David Villa, Mario Gotze but Jovetic is seemingly Wenger’s current number 1 target and the versatile striker would certainly fit in Arsenal’s style of play with his clever movement and eye for goal. Jovetic is 23 this season and has scored 11 goals in 20 league appearances for La Viola, most recently a brace against Inter Milan, but his best season lies ahead of him, possibly at the Emirates.

Fiorentina have already acquired Giuseppe Rossi in the winter transfer window, as a possible replacement for the outbound Jovetic, and a deal to sell the Montenegro striker to Arsenal seems quite likely. But the Italian outfit currently value their star asset at a staggering £30 million and are not expected to accept anything less than that.

Arsenal would therefore need to break their transfer record by twice the amount, which currently stands at £15 million from the acquisition of Andrei Ashravin. Such a huge transfer fee would seem to make it impossible for Arsenal to land their man, but Wenger realises that Arsenal need to spend big to land trophies and has the backing of the board to splash the cash in the summer, which is long overdue.
