Is Arsenal Preparing A Raid On Bundesliga’s Most Wanted?

Arsenal’s boss is known for making very calculated decisions when it comes to transfers regardless of the time of year. The January window is known for being the least interesting as players always wait for the summer to make big decisions. There are some more subtle negotiations for players who don’t stand out to anyone unless they know where to look. Wenger has an eye for talent and given the success of his last transfers, also has an eye for underrated players. According to Squawka, the Frenchman has set his sights on three Bundesliga footballers who look right up Arsenal’s alley. If up front Arsenal are good for now, the midfield and the defense might suffer if any of the regulars pick up injuries. With that in mind, a move on any of the following is plausible. The only issue that comes to mind is their current contract length which is hard to handle during the Winter window.

  1. Benedikt Howedes – this German international has been on Wenger’s radar for a while now but things never materialized. The 27-year-old who is currently Schalke’s captain could be a solution for replacing Mertesacker when in need. He currently has 280 games for the only club he played up until now. The biggest problem with him is his fragile physique. He will come to the Emirates with strong first team expectations for sure which could be a setback.
  2. Granit Xhaka – Monchengladbach’s midfielder has grown immensely over the past couple of months and has become one of the most watched players in Germany. The 23 year old can play a role similar to that of Bousquets or Matic which could come in handy for Wenger who is surely in search of a strong competitor for Coquelin who only has Arteta and Flamini as backups.
  3. Karim Bellarabi – Leverkusen’s attacker is seen as a good solution to cover the left wing. Even though his contract is set to expire in 2020, he could still be interested in joining given the fact that he has Ozil and Mertesacker to help acclimaise him.

Out of these three, Bellarabi would probably be the best investment. The left side which is now covered by Sanchez could use someone with the German’s skill to provide options and strength off the bench. It remains to be seen if any negotiations will start rolling in January.
