‘Important’ Xhaka commits long-term future to Arsenal with new contract

Granit Xhaka has signed a new long term deal at Arsenal and will be an ‘important’ player for the club in the coming seasons, according to manager Unai Emery.

The 25-year-old’s future was up in the air following the departure of Arsene Wenger earlier this year, however speculation has now ended after the Swiss midfielder pet pen to paper on a new deal at The Emirates.

Unai Emery, who was appointed as Wenger’s successor in North London last month, says his delighted to have secured Xhaka’s services for the foreseeable future.

He said: “I’m delighted. He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more.

“I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”

Xhaka travelled to Russia with Switzerland for this summer’s tournament, and will face a big challenge in his first game when his country take on Brazil on Sunday night.

Despite what are sure to be hectic preparations, Xhaka found time to commit his long term future to Arsenal – something he says he is delighted to finally have sorted following ongoing speculation he could leave the club this summer.

He said in a short but sweet statement: “I am happy and proud to sign a new contract for Arsenal and I hope for good results in the future.”
