“I Would Take Him…” Paul Merson Urges Arsenal To Sign 43M Rated United Target Instead Of Felix

“I Would Take Him…” Paul Merson Urges Arsenal To Sign 43M Rated United Target Instead Of Felix

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes his former club should be eyeing a move for PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo, rather than going after Joao Felix.

Gakpo has had an outstanding season for club and country, having also shined for the Netherlands at the World Cup, and Merson feels he would be an excellent replacement for Gabriel Jesus:

“Arsenal have got to go and get Cody Gakpo after Gabriel Jesus’ knee injury. They’ve got to go and get someone. They’ve got a free swing.”Eddie Nketiah can’t keep it up, no disrespect to the kid. Of course he can’t. It’s too much to ask. He is brilliant to come on as a sub but they’ve got to go and get a focal point. I’d get Gakpo, he’s lively and scores goals. I would take him over Joao Felix, all day long.”

The Gunners have been linked with Gakpo in recent months, along with the likes of Liverpool, Leeds and Southampton but Manchester United are the team who have been tipped as his likeliest destination.

The player revealed back in September that the Red Devils made contact about signing him during the summer transfer window. In recent days, he has again stated that he would seriously consider a switch to Old Trafford.

Were Arsenal to come in and hijack the deal, though, Gakpo probably wouldn’t say no to the London club. PSV are believed to be demanding around €50m (£43m) for the 23-year-old.
