“I Never Thought I Would Say That…” Michael Owen Makes Title Contender Claim After Arsenal’s Win Against Liverpool

Michael Owen believes that Arsenal are Manchester City’s “biggest challengers” for the Premier League title following Sunday’s win against Liverpool.

The Gunners returned to the top of the table after the 3-2 victory at the Emirates and, when asked about Mikel Arteta’s side’s chances of winning the league, Owen admitted it was a genuine possibility:

“There is no fluke about it, at the moment. They have got very, very good players. They are playing in a very good way. Confidence throughout the team and confidence at the club. Some of the main protagonists are struggling, at the moment. So, yes I do think they could be the biggest challengers. I never thought I would say that. I can’t believe it.”

Arsenal are now fourteen points ahead of Liverpool after nine games played, which is quite incredible considering they finished 23 points behind them last campaign.

In terms of the title, Owen is justified in putting them right up there as contenders, but City’s form does look pretty ominous. Their 4-0 win against Southampton at the weekend means they have now scored 33 goals in just nine matches.

Arteta’s men were due to take on the reigning champions later this month but, after a fixture change, their postponed match versus PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League will be played on that week instead. We may have to wait until the New Year before we see the two teams face other.
