Gunners Fail To Redeem Themselves After Last Year’s 3-1 Home Loss Against Bayern

The Gunners started strong and prevented the German side from implementing their elaborate passing game. Even so, Kross managed to get in a great shot, only to be denied by an incredible display of agility by Szczesny who deflected the ball just enough to miss the left corner of the net.

Arsenal responded properly but were denied by Neuer who also proved to be having a great night. Sanogo could have scored his first goal for the Gunners if not for the German International’s cat-like reflexes.

Just 8 minutes into the game Ozil was brought down inside the box by Boateng after some nice footwork by Arsenal’s midfielder. Unfortunately for the Emirates team, the German executed the penalty with no determination whatsoever, allowing Neuer to keep the scoreboard intact.

It was all downhill from then on. Wenger and his players lost control of the game. Despite Oxlade-Chamberlain’s excellent runs down the right side of the pitch and Sanogo’s few struggles to win the ball inside the box, Bayern were the ones to dominate.

Luck was not on the side of the fans of Arsena tonight. After failing to convert the penalty shot into a goal, the Gunners lost Gibbs to an injury and Szczesny due to a red card given for a foul on Robben inside the box. Even if Alaba hit the post and the score remained 0-0, Wenger’s side could not do too much to stay into the game.

The second half was not all about Bayern trying to score. The Germans managed around 600 passes while Arsenal only got 200 right. They dominated the game completely and managed to score through Kross during the 54th minute and Muller during the 88th minute. There was not much Wenger could have done considering the thin substitutes bench and the poor performances by Ozil or Flamini. Hopefully the North Londoners will be able to recreate last year’s performance when they defeated Bayern on their own territory and almost made it through the next stage of the Champions League.
