Granit Xhaka Linked Once More To Arsenal

Arsenal are very close to signing 23-year-old Granit Xhaka. According to Squawka, the Swiss international is Wenger’s number 1 target for the summer as Arteta, Rosicky and Flamini will be leaving. There’s that and there’s also the fact that Wilshere and Cazorla leave a huge gap in the midfield when they are out with injury (which sadly has been much of the season). With that in mind, signing a new midfielder other than Elneny is not something Wenger needs to think twice about. Speaking about Arsenal’s last transfer, a certain pattern might emerge. The transfer of Mohamed Elneny has a similar background story in terms of rumors and negotiation. You could clearly see that out of all the transfer rumors, the ones regarding the Egyptian international made most sense and were the most plausible.

Hopefully, Xhaka’s story will end the same way – with him joining Arsenal. Even though he is under contract with Monchengladbach until 2019, a solid offer could cut his Bundesliga experience short. The only issue with this young midfielder is his cost. Apparently he is now valued at about £20million. Why is that a problem? Because in almost 200 professional games, he scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists. Arsenal already have two players who know of to stop their adversaries and recover the ball. Coquelin and Elneny are exactly those kind of players. Throw in Chambers who was featured as a defensive midfielder a couple of times and there’s no point in spending that much money to cover a position which is pretty much covered. Sure, if Xhaka would have been the kind of who averages a goal every couple of games and provides assists to the attack he would have been worth the money.

Wenger would improve the team a lot more by bringing in someone with a more offensive profile. Isco would probably do the trick. He is not only strong on his feet he is also very versatile. He can cover a lot of ground and he is a very hard worker. He could play with Ozil or he could even play as a winger on both the left and the right. If Arsenal’s boss would want to change things up, Isco could also be included in a diamond formation in the middle. There are a lot of options and again, Arsenal would benefit a lot more from bringing in someone who often finds himself in front of goal and can bag a few goals from midfield.
