So after Arsenal made it three wins in a row with their 2-1 away win over Newcastle it was many people’s favourite scape goat Mesut Ozil who ended up scoring what turned out to be the winner for Unai Emery’s side.
Arsenal were largely underwhelming in the first half but were much improved in the second half where Mesut Ozil along with a number of other Gunners put in quite the shift.
Granit Xhaka, another often maligned Arsenal player, put his team 1-0 up with a sumptuous free-kick which gave Newcastle goalkeeper Dubravka absolutely no chance early in the second half.
Then following a period of Arsenal pressure and a blocked shot from Lacazette the ball fell to Ozil who calmy slotted the ball home from about 15 yards out much to the delight of his team-mates who obviously knew the classy German midfielder was playing in his 200th game for Arsenal and promptly mobbed him.
Although Arsenal were deserving winners they did concede an injury time goal to Newcastle substitute Kieran Clark so if it was not for Ozil’s assured finish Unai Emery would have left St James Park with only a point.
Ozil was the epitome of composure in his play on Saturday as he showed an impressive work-rate, efficient use of the ball along with his usual creativity plus he put in an all around display both in attack but also in defence for his team and he spoke after the game of how he is enjoying playing for the new manager seemingly putting to bed supposed rumours linking Ozil with a move to Turkey because of issues between him and Unai Emery.
While Newcastle have only got a point to show for their 5 games played so far this season they made Spurs, Man City and Chelsea all really earn their three points so Arsenal’s victory should not be underestimated.
Gooners took to Twitter after the match and were full of praise for Mesut Ozil as you can see below – and rightly so as he delivered a top performance and a goal worthy of winning any game.
