Goalkeeper reveals he was close to joining Arsenal this summer

Cedric Carrasso has revealed how he nearly became an Arsenal player during the summer transfer window.

The former France international goalkeeper was released by Bordeaux in the summer and is currently on the lookout for a new club as a free-agent.

Arsenal allowed third choice ‘keeper Emilio Martinez to leave the club on a season-long loan to Getafe and did not proceed to sign a back-up for goalkeepers Petr Cech and David Ospina. However the veteran Carrasso says he was on the verge of a move to the Emirates, but talks fell through due to troubles with agents.

When talking to L’Equipe about how his proposed move to Sporting Lisbon fell through, the goalkeeper also explained how the same happened with a potential move to Arsenal.

“This offer I accepted,” Carrasso said about why a move to Sporting Lisbon also collapsed.

“Everything was OK but it messed up. There was a bug with the agents there.”

“Same for Arsenal. Arsene wanted to work with three good goalies.”

“I had to go as a third. At the beginning, I said to myself: ‘Third to do nothing, if not to be in the group, it is not very interesting.”

“After, I said to myself: ‘It’s Arsenal all the same!’ And there was still this problem of agents.”

Of course, bringing in a player of Carrasso’s experience is something that should never be frowned upon. But it is highly unlikely that he would have been given a chance at the Emirates, and perhaps it will be better to give any potential opportunities to a youthful goalkeeper who is looking to come up through the ranks.
