German Revolution At Arsenal?

The club have been associated with German footballers since the turn of the decade. They had goalkeeper Jens Lehmann in goal for a long time. Fast track that to the last couple of seasons as Arsenal signed German national team defender Per Mertesacker as a part of that crazy Transfer Deadline Day of 2011.

He went on to provide Mertesacker some company as he signed Lukas Podolski from FC Koln last summer. Apart from these established internationals, a few young German players are present in the youth setup as well. Thomas Eisfeld and Serge Gnabry are of German nationality. Gedion Zelalem, who turned several heads during Arsenal’s pre-season tour to Asia, is yet another German in Arsenal’s setup.

Furthermore, the recent arrival of Mesut Ozil at the Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid has just increased the German contingent by one. Judging by the way things are developing now, Arsenal could very well become a hub for Germans in the near future, as they are also set to attempt to lure the likes of Ikay Gundogan, Marco Reus and Lars Bender.

Arsenal have already had a £18.5 million bid for Bender rejected in the summer. They are expected to return in January for the industrious midfielder. Manager Arsene Wenger has also asked to be kept updated on the Borussia Dortmund duo of Gundogan and Reus. Wenger rates the two very highly and Daily Mail report that he is keen to add them to his growing German contingent.

The recent developments are a sign of the fact that Wenger is perhaps moving away from his former approach towards signing his French compatriots. The question which develops now is that whether this growing German camp will work in Arsenal’s favor in securing that much awaited first trophy.

The capture of Ozil is a sure sign that the club is moving in the right direction. They now need to take this and build their team further to mount a sustained challenge in the stiff competition of the English league.
