Former Arsenal Star Admits Regret

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny admits he has regrets about how his Arsenal career has come to an end. The Polish keeper has joined Juventus for around £10m, after spending two years on loan at Roma.

Szczesny joined Arsenal as a 16-year-old and was touted for stardom after breaking into the first team at such a young age, but he failed to stake any real claim for the No.1 spot, and after many controversies during his time at Arsenal, including having been disciplined for smoking in the showers, he has left the club.

Szczesny has been a fairly consistent goalkeeper in Serie A, hence why Juve are willing to take him on a 4-year deal. He is likely to play second fiddle to Gianluigi Buffon at Juventus, at least until the Italian legend hangs up his boots after the 2018 World Cup.

However, despite joining one of the biggest teams in the world, the Poland international has admitted there are regrets over the way he has left the Gunners.

“It’s a difficult question [whether I regret how things ended at Arsenal]. I spent 11 years there,” said an emotional Szczesny.

“It has been over 11 years since I became an Arsenal player and I never thought the day I leave this club would come. Everything that I am and everything that I have, I owe to Arsenal, Arsene Wenger, Liam Brady, David Court, Bob Arber, Steve Bould, Neil Banfield, Mike Salmon, Tony Roberts, Gerry Peyton, Pat Rice and many others.”

“Today I move on, ready for the new challenge in my life, taking with me only the good memories and bags of experience. I leave hopeful that those days of Berkamp, Henry, Seaman and others are soon to return to Emirates Stadium and Arsenal get back to winning the Premier League. ”

“I may be an Arsenal player no more but I will carry the Arsenal name with me wherever I go and I will do so with great pride.” [Quotes via Evening Standard]

Szczesny had so much potential when he joined Arsenal, and was given chance after chance by Wenger in order to succeed at the club – the manager clearly rated the goalkeeper very highly.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish Szczesny all the best at Juventus.
