Fabregas talks up Arsenal signing

Arsenal have been very busy so far this summer with transfers, having already made two signings and another two said to be on the way shortly.

Stephan Lichtsteiner has joined on a free transfer from Juventus after his contract expired at the San Siro, and German goalkeeper Bernd Leno’s move to the Emirates was confirmed on Tuesday from Leverkusen for a fee of around £20m.

It has been widely reported that Arsenal have also completed the signing of Greek centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who has agreed a deal with the Gunners ahead of a £16m move from Borussia Dortmund. This move is unlikely to be announced until July though, with the German club supposedly wanting to comply with financial regulations.

22-year-old midfielder Lucas Torreira has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal over the last few weeks, with the Uruguay international supposedly joining for a fee of around £30m.

It is believed that a deal for Torreira will be concluded after the World Cup this summer, where he will join up with Emery and the Arsenal players for pre-season.

After Uruguay’s 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas had his say on the South American side’s midfield, singling out Torreira, as well as Juventus ace Rodrigo Bentacur, as stars of the future.

Asked about Juventus’ Bentancur, the ex-Arsenal man told BBC Sport: “I think he’s one of the positives of the tournament, individually, so far.

“He’s a young boy who signed for Juventus.

“He hasn’t played a lot but you can see that he has a lot of personality, likes to play, he’s not scared.

“And for a team like Uruguay that doesn’t have a lot of ‘ballers’ or possession – they need a player like him.

“They also have Torreira on the bench who I really like for Sampdoria and they break lines.”
