Ex United Coach Believes Welbeck Can Strengthen Arsenal!

Danny Welbeck, who has come through the ranks at United, joined the Gunners in a surprise deal on transfer deadline day after the Red Devils had brought in Radamel Falcao from Monaco. Arsenal agreed a £16 million deal with United and signed the forward on a long-term deal to solve their goal scoring woes.

Olivier Giroud is out for the rest of 2014 and Wenger has put his trust in Welbeck to fire the goals for Arsenal. Despite scoring just 29 goals in 142 appearances for United, the 23-year-old has been backed to shine at the Emirates by his old coach Rene Meulensteen.

Meulensteen spoke to Sky Sports before the deal was announced and said, “Wenger’s done a really good job, for both parties and also for Danny, because it’s a shame that obviously he probably has to leave Manchester United.

“I’d like to say I hate to see him go, but for him it would be a fantastic move, and he’s the sort of player that can really strengthen Arsenal. He’s excellent to work with and I’ve known him since eight or nine years of age so I’ve seen him come through, I know what kind of talent he has.”

He added, “Danny is not an out-and-out goal scorer, and that’s probably where his criticism comes from. He could probably say he should have scored more goals on the pitch. He is a link player, he’s a creator, he’s unpredictable, and don’t forget, he’s still young. There’s still mileage in him, if he is in the right team and gets the right run of games, he would score more goals.”

So Welbeck has plenty of upside and he is English which is rare, so maybe he will flourish at the Emirates – let’s hope so!
