Arsenal boss Unai Emery has revealed more about the departure of Jack Wilshre this summer, speaking out about a conversation between the two before he decided to leave the club.
Wilshere had been at Arsenal for 17 years before he decided against extending his contract beyond the summer, eventually opting to join West Ham United on a free transfer.
The midfielder has spoken about his decision to leave the club in the past, saying it was difficult to stay put with the limited amount of game time he was promised.
It was even reported that the England international was willing to take a pay-cut in order to stay at the Emirates, but Emery offered a significant reduction in game time.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Emery gave further details of exactly why Wilshere decided to end his long reign at the Gunners.
“The conversation with Wilshere was a very good conversation, very directly, together,” said Emery. “I explained to him my opinion and how I wanted to create the team, and I wasn’t sure he was going to play in the 11 players.
“Also he explained to me that the decision is not easy for him, but he wanted to chose the best option for him, and every time it is with respect. I know this player is important here for the supporters and he grew up here in Arsenal, but I can’t guarantee him a place in the starting 11. It was a tactical, technical decision.
“It is for that reason that he chose to leave here, and I respect this.”
Wilshere joins a host of new faces at West Ham United during an exciting time for the club.
