Dutch Defender Not Thinking About Possible Arsenal Switch

Arsenal’s current first-choice right-back Bacary Sagna has just around one year left on his current deal at Arsenal. The situation at the club regarding the future of the 30-year old is very delicate, as there have not been any developments in agreeing to a contract extension.

Insiders suggest that Sagna could be the next high profile name to walk out of the Emirates Stadium in the summer. Sadly, the Gunners are somewhat used to seeing their star players leave every summer. Captain Cesc Fabregas left for his boyhood club Barcelona, while Samir Nasri joined the revolution at Manchester City in 2011. Dutch striker Robin van Persie swapped Arsenal for Manchester United, and defensive midfielder Alex Song joined Fabregas at Nou Camp last year.

Given the failure to come to an agreement regarding a contract extension, it is being said that Sagna could soon join that list of high-profile departures. Reports surfacing in the British media state that Sagna could opt for a move back to his native France, with French moneybags Paris Saint-Germain being touted as a possible destination for the right-back.

If Sagna does leave, some Arsenal fans are convinced that young full-back, Carl Jenkinson, could fill the boots of the French international, if he does decide to leave. However, it can be argued that Jenkinson is still a 20-year old, and despite his massive improvement from last season, he is still a raw, young player who needs to be nurtured and polished for a few seasons before he be a genuine starter for Arsenal.

Therefore, manager Arsene Wenger has started looking at possible replacements for Sagna, should the defender leave in the summer. A few names have been rumored lately, with Dutch international Daryl Janmaat the most frequently mentioned.

The right-back joined Feyenoord last year from Heerenveen and has been impressive this season, which has earned him numerous plaudits. However, Janmaat has, for the time being, distanced himself from a summer move to the Gunners, as he stated that he does not wish to be distracted by transfer talks, and instead intends to help his club make the final push in an attempt to win the league title.

Speaking to Voetbal International, the 23-year old said, “Arsenal’s interest in me? I’m only thinking about Feyenoord now. Much remains to be played this season before thinking about the transfer market.”

Judging by his statement, he is 100% committed to Feyenoord at the moment as he prepares for the final push of the season. However, he has not completely shut the door on the possibility of a move away in the summer.

One thing is certain, Arsenal will be looking to bring in a new defender, should Sagna decide to quit the club and most people’s best bet would be that Wenger tries to lure the Dutch international to the Emirates Stadium.
