Diego Fancies Arsenal Move

The 28-year-old Diego has already plied his trade in Brazil, Portugal, Germany, Italy and Spain but is now interested to try his luck in England’s Barclays Premier League. The Brazilian started his career at Santos and then spent two seasons with Porto before he made really his name in Europe with German side Werder Bremen.

Diego spent three seasons with Bremen and scored 38 league goals in 84 appearances. He also helped the club to lift the domestic cup competition, the DFB Pokal, in the 2008-09 season which turned out to be his final year at the club.

An ill-fated season in Juventus followed post which the playmaker decided to return to Germany ahead of the 2010-11 season with Wolfsburg for €15.5 million. He joined Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan deal in 2011-12 but no permanent move materialized and he returned to Wolfsburg the following campaign.

With his contract due to expire next summer, the midfielder is free to sign a pre-agreement with other clubs in January. Diego is expected to leave the Volkswagen Arena and has already ruffled the team’s feathers by claiming he wants to move to Arsenal, who are currently the table-toppers of the Premier League.

According to ESPN, Diego would be open to joining Arsenal, who he says are interested in his services. He also said that he would consider a move to Southampton, the surprise package of the league so far.

He said, “I know there is interest from Premier League clubs. I have heard Arsenal is one of them. It would be the ideal destination for me because their style suits my characteristics perfectly. Of course I would say ‘yes’ to Arsenal.”

“Southampton have great organisation and discipline and big talents like Adam Lallana. But again there is nothing concrete. Playing in England is a very attractive option at the peak of my career but I’m focusing on helping Wolfsburg get to the Champions League.”

With a rich array of attacking talent at the disposal of Wenger, it will be hard to see where Diego could possibly fit. The likes of Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also be vying for a place in the starting eleven once they come back from injury.

However, it would not be an unwise move on the part of Wenger to sign Diego in January. The Gunners always have injury problems, and if they want to compete in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup till the very end, the option to sign Diego could seem tempting.

Currently, by his own admission, Diego is in his peak years, so should Arsene Wenger make a move for him?
