Delight For Arsenal As Wilshere Plays Down Injury Fears

Jack Wilshere started the UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday night on the left hand side where he has been deployed in recent games due to the absence of wide players at the club. He has been influential of late as he has scored 2 goals in his last 2 league games.

The English international however hurt his ankle while chasing the ball in a one-on-one situation in the first half. He was slower than Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller to get to the ball and while in pursuit, he injured himself. The 21-year old then lay on the ground in agonizing pain while clutching his ankle.

He received treatment for a good few minutes behind the Dortmund goal and then joined back in the game, and seemed much better as he tried to run it off. He lasted till half-time and then even came out in the second half for 10 minutes after manager Arsene Wenger decided to not risk worsening the injury, thus replacing him with Spaniard Santi Cazorla.

Wilshere then was seen sinking his foot into a bag of ice which raised alarms about the nature and extent of the setback. The midfielder however spoke to the press after Arsenal’s 2-1 loss and while describing the cause of the injury, has assured fans that the ice was just a precautionary measure and that he expects to make it to the squad for the Gunners’ trip to Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Daily Mail report him as saying after the Dortmund game, “I jarred it when I was going through (on goal).”

“My ankle stopped and my body went over it and I jarred it a little bit. For five or 10 minutes it was painful, then I ran it off, but it made sense to put ice on it.”

“I’ve done that before, even before I had surgery. It is just one of those things. Obviously I will have treatment tomorrow because it is still a bit swollen, but I should be all right for the weekend.”

This will be a relief for Arsenal who are already missing Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain through injuries, and adding yet another important player would be a calamity for them.
