Arsenal have added a quality striker which was the key priority for Wenger this summer and the Frenchman has now shifted his attention to the holding midfield role. Wenger has shown considerable interest in Germany duo Sami Khedira and Lars Bender, and has made enquiries over the availability of the duo, according to the Telegraph.

Mikel Arteta is not a long-term viable option at the holding midfield role with Wenger targeting a new world class talent in that department. Khedira has been linked with a move to the Emirates after rejecting Real Madrid’s new two-year contract extension offer.

The 27-year-old just has a year remaining on his current contract but is still likely to command a fee in excess of £20 million. The Gunners are willing to spend that amount on the German international but his wage demands could be a hindrance.

Wenger is also a long-term admirer of Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender and had a £19 million bid rejected last summer. He is expected to reignite his interest in the 25-year-old in case a move for Khedira fizzles out.
