De Jong’s Move To United May Scupper Arsenal’s Chances Of Signing Brazilian Midfield Maestro

Barcelona are considering Arsenal target Arthur as a potential replacement for Frenkie de Jong, according to reports in the Italian media.

The Dutchman is expected to complete his €85m (£74m) move to Old Trafford soon, and it is believed that Barca boss Xavi is keen on bringing back Arthur on loan to reinforce his options in the middle of the park.

Juventus signed the Brazilian as part of a swap deal with Miralem Pjanic two years ago, but the exchange has gone down as one of the worst transfers negotiated by the Catalan side’s previous president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

In terms of what this means for Arsenal, the Gunners tried to loan Arthur in January, only for the move to fall through after Juve demanded a purchase clause. The London club have yet to revive the move this summer, as it appears strengthening the midfield is not a priority for manager Mikel Arteta at the moment.

Reliable journalist David Ornstein believes that a player (such as Granit Xhaka) may have to be sold first before the club consider more additions in that area of the pitch.
