Could this powerful French striker be joining Arsenal?

Arsenal have been linked with a number of top strikers this summer already and if you subscribe to the “where there is smoke there is fire” theory then it would seem a new centre-forward will be signed by Arsene Wenger this window. The Arsenal boss appears to be ready to splash the cash this time around in what many have suggested will be a major revamp of the first team squad.

The Gunners have been linked with big moves for the likes of Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe and Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette this month. All three are hot properties but if you believe the Telegraph then not only is Mbappe Arsenal’s preferred target but the starlet is also open to a move to the Emirates.

Virtually all of Europe’s top clubs have been credited with an interest in Monaco’s striker including all the big boys like Real Madrid, Manchester United and PSG. Zinedine Zidane is seemingly incredibly keen on Mbappe and has even gone as far as reportedly saying that Karim Benzema or Gareth Bale may have to leave to make room for the starlet in the Spanish capital.

So it does seem then as though Arsenal may not get their man but new reports suggest the Gunners are beginning to plan for that eventuality. Arsene Wenger has been strongly linked with Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette but it is another French striker who is now rumoured to be on the Arsene Wenger’s wish list.

According to reports in the Mail on Sunday, Arsenal are setting their sites on Man United’s French striker – none other than Anthony Martial. The piece talks about Arsenal being prepared to pay in the neighbourhood of £40million. United paid £36million in 2015 but the deal could go up to £58million with add-ons so  you would think that even if United were looking to sell they would want at least the £58million.

Martial playing for Wenger could be a marriage made in heaven – Wenger has had success with big powerful, fast French strikers in the past – a certain Thierry Henry comes to mind. Martial is only 21 years old so he would be one for the future and the present. Whether Jose Mourinho would be prepared to sell Anthony Martial at all let alone to Arsene Wenger remains to be seen however but you would have to say it seems rather unlikely.

Regardless Arsenal continue to be linked with quality players so the summer looks like it still has a lot of promise for Gooners in their desire for a major squad overhaul.
