Could Arsenal Really Try To Snatch Rooney?

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing the unsettled Wayne Rooney from Manchester United this summer, after manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that the player has put in a transfer request at the club.

Despite the transfer request being rejected, this is the second time Rooney has shown public displeasure in putting on a United shirt. Rooney had shown similar concerns back in October, 2010, when he and his representatives released a public statement stating ‘ambition’ being the reason for him leaving, and not money as speculated. However, Sir Alex refused the transfer request and convinced Rooney to sign a new contract to stay at United.

Today, United fans are not only uncertain about Rooney’s commitment to the side, but also his confidence, which seems to have wavered this season. The arrival of Robin van Persie from Arsenal did not help Rooney’s cause, as the Dutchman was installed as the permanent center forward, while Rooney was not deemed a regular in the side.

Last week was dominated by the news of Sir Alex retiring from management, while Rooney was booed during the club’s Premier League winning parade in Manchester on Monday.

There has not been a particular club linked strongly with Rooney, but Arsene Wenger had been questioned about his potential interest in signing the player. The French manager refused to answer any questions about transfers until the season is over this week.

Gervinho has not been a regular this year, making just 14 appearances this season in the Premier League. Wenger clearly does not believe the Ivorian is in prime form, and Rooney could be the answer to the striking questions raised by the manager.

The only problem with this deal is the price, which could be a stumbling block for Arsenal. Rooney has put in a request to leave, which will not go down well with the board, and they will demand a big transfer sum in return for the England international’s departure.

According to the Metro, Wenger said, “Look, I’m not in a position today to speak about any transfer targets.”

“What I am focused on is the short term and after the Newcastle game I give you answers about these questions.”

Arsenal fans will be hoping this silence is an indication of interest behind the scenes in some serious players even if Rooney is not one of them.
