Chris Wheatley Rates Arsenal’s Chances Of Signing Houssem Aouar Before The Transfer Deadline

Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar “is expected to stay” with the Ligue One side, according to Football.London‘s Arsenal correspondent Chris Wheatley.

There has been talk that the Gunners have been offered the 23-year-old but Wheatley suggests that while Lyon are open to the player leaving, the Gunners are unlikely to table a bid ahead of the transfer deadline.

Wheatley reports that “enquiries” have been made for Aouar “recently” but it looks as though the Frenchman won’t be moving to the Emirates this summer unless something dramatic happens before 11 pm.

It will be a surprise if Arsenal don’t bring in another midfielder before the window shuts. Both Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey will be travelling for the African Cup of Nations in January next year, meaning manager Mikel Arteta will have to rely on Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga for a number of games.

Whether the Gunners are keeping tabs on alternatives to Aouar, we shall have to wait and see. Wolves’ Ruben Neves was being considered earlier in the summer but things have gone quiet on that front in recent weeks.
