Champions League Overhaul Could See Up To SIX Premier League Teams Qualifying For The Competition

UEFA shared their proposals with Premier League clubs for an overhaul of European competitions yesterday and it could lead to six English teams qualifying for the Champions League group stage from 2024.

Four clubs would qualify through their finishing position, but two more could be eligible if their UEFA coefficient is high enough. The coefficient is calculated through historical performance in Europe so, if they have been getting to the latter stages of UEFA competitions in past seasons, they could play in the Champions League, even if they finish 5th, 6th or 7th.

The new proposals also outline a different format for the group stages. The format will comprise of one 36 team league table based on the “Swiss model” with each team playing ten games.

European Leagues are expected to discuss the plans more today, but they are likely to resist playing ten matches, with eight being seen as more plausible considering the packed fixture schedule.
