Cech should be Arsenal’s No.1, says Seaman

Arsenal legend David Seaman says goalkeeper Petr Cech should be the No.1 under Unai Emery next season, despite the capture of £19m Bernd Leno this summer.

Leno arrived from Bayer Leverkusen this summer for a fee of around £20m, and has brought with him plenty of excitement as he is an experienced character with 230 appearances across seven Bundesliga seasons under his belt.

But despite his arrival, Seaman still believes Cech’s superior experience holds him in higher regard than the German, and that the 36-year-old should be in between the sticks ahead of Leno and Ospina.

“He [Cech] has still got great qualities and it isn’t like he has had a bad season or anything, he still produced,” Seaman told Sky Sports.

“Obviously he is getting older but your game adapts, that is what I found, you might not be as sharp as what you used to be but your experience gets you into the right positions.”

Seaman also admitted he believes Ospina’s future at the club is in doubt with the arrival of Leno, saying a ‘keeper of his stature should not be third choice.

“I don’t think Ospina would be quite happy being a No 2 because he has been that for quite a while,” Seaman said.

“He might even be a No 3 so I would imagine David wants to play football, you can’t spend a big chunk of your career being a reserve. You’ve got to go out there and see how good you are.”
