Carragher Questions Emery’s Long Term Future After Arsenal Slump To Defeat

Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal manager Unai Emery has it all to do to convince the Gunners’ hierarchy he is deserving of a third season in charge after last night’s defeat to Sheffield United.

The TV pundit thinks the London club have not improved since the Spaniard’s arrival, and even goes as far to say that they are now playing worse football than they did under previous coach Arsene Wenger:

“I’ve said it before, I don’t see anything different from when Arsene Wenger was there at the end. In fact, it actually looks worse.”

“I always think a manager in his first season is getting to know his players and the league and it’s still early in his second season, but I think we are just getting to that stage now in the next months, six weeks, then we get towards Christmas where you start actually thinking, ‘is Emery the man to go into a third season?’ What has changed? Nothing has changed.”

The lack of progress under Emery is beginning to frustrate fans, but with the season just nine games old, the board are unlikely to make any rash decisions regarding the manager.

Arsenal are currently in fifth place, four points off Manchester City in second, and while their position in the table isn’t too concerning, the performances, especially away from home, are a major worry.

The Gunners face Vitoria Guimaraes in the Europa League on Thursday night before a home game against sixth-place Crystal Palace on Sunday.
