Carragher Disagrees With Scholes As United Legend Makes Controversial Title Claim About Arsenal And Liverpool

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes claims that Liverpool have a “better” chance of winning the league league than Arsenal.

When speaking to a fan on The Overlap, Scholes said he believes Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will be more concerned about the Reds than the Gunners as a potential title rival:

“Do you not think you’ve got a chance? I think you’re better than Arsenal, I think you’re better than Arsenal, they excite me more. It’s not nice saying that but honestly, Liverpool do excite me more.”

“Everything they’ve got, it feels better than Arsenal. I think Pep Guardiola might be more worried about Liverpool than Arsenal.”

Fellow presenter Jamie Carragher disputed Scholes’ assertion by saying:

“You think Liverpool are better than Arsenal? That’s interesting. I don’t actually.”

Arsenal showed their credentials at the Etihad

Despite conceding late on against Manchester City, the 2-2 draw away from home demonstrates that Mikel Arteta’s side will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

In contrast, Liverpool (now under the management of Arne Slot) have yet to prove themselves against the same standard of opposition. They did win 3-0 at Old Trafford but, as we have seen with Tottenham’s victory against United at the weekend, that is not saying much.

With the Reds having also lost at home to Nottingham Forest, Scholes would have to concede that they have yet to show many signs that they are genuine title contenders.

The two teams face each other next month

We won’t have to wait long to discover whether Scholes’ assertion that Liverpool are a “better” team is accurate. Slot’s men go to the Emirates quite soon after the next international break.

The Gunners won the corresponding fixture 3-1 last season and, if there is a repeat of that scoreline, it may put to bed any suggestions that the Reds will compete for top spot.
