Carragher Gives His Verdict On Arsenal’s Champions League Ambitions

Sky Sports pundit Jame Carragher does not think that Arsenal will be in contention for the Champions League places at the end of the season.

With Manchester City’s European ban, fifth place could well be enough to qualify for the competition, but Carragher cannot see the Gunners challenging the other teams near the top of the table:

“There has been a lot of positivity around Mikel Arteta coming in and how things have changed. He hasn’t actually changed the results that much, in fact, they’ve actually got worse in some ways. It was a big thing for them to get the win, but Arsenal aren’t good enough to get into the Champions League.”

It is a slightly harsh assessment from Carragher to say things haven’t improved under Arteta. There have been a lot of draws, but performances, on the whole, have been a step up on games earlier in the season when Unai Emery was still in charge.

The first half against Newcastle was certainly not good enough, but once again, an excellent half time team talk from the Arsenal boss inspired a much-improved display.

Whether that second half is an indicator of what is to come between now and the end of the season, we shall have to see. If they can maintain that level, they will have a chance of finishing in the top 5.
