Bellerin criticises free spending clubs

Arsenal star Hector Bellerin has hit out at clubs spending hundreds of millions on players. Premier League clubs spent almost £1.5billion during the summer transfer window, as well as PSG forking out over €200m on Brazilian forward Neymar.

Bellerin, who was linked with a move to boyhood club Barcelona at the beginning of the summer, says it is not within Arsenal’s philosophy to splash the cash like other clubs – saying that money is not everything.

Arsenal spent £53m on striker Alexandre Lacazette during the summer, a club-record fee. They were also linked with a deadline day move for £93m Thomas Lemar, a move that eventually fell through. However, in an interview with IBTimes UK, Bellerin defended the Gunners’ transfer policy.

“Football is not just about spending money.”

“There are some clubs paying £100m and £200m on players but I do not think that’s the philosophy.”

“The important thing is to build a good team, a good block and get results from there. Sometimes it takes time while other clubs use money.”

“Each club have its own resources and its way of working. What matters is that on the pitch we give the maximum to prove that money is not everything.”

Bellerin does have a very valid point when it comes to money in football, but it has to be said that big fees are something people must get used to nowadays. For clubs to compete, they simply have to spend.
