Barca Star Ideal For Arsenal?

Alexis Sanchez rose to stardom in the 2010-11 season with Udinese where he scored 11 league goals in 31 appearances. His stellar performances during that season earned him wide acclaim and recognition, as he was named the world’s most promising youngster of the season, beating the likes of Neymar, Bale, Pastore and Ganso.

It was inevitable that a big name club would come calling for Sanchez after his breakthrough season and he obviously couldn’t turn down the offer to play alongside Messi at Barcelona. There were a lot of eyes on the young Chilean, who came to a new country to play in a star-studded team, and he had a good debut season, even when you consider the fact that he was beset with injuries.

He won four trophies in his debut season and also scored an impressive 12 league goals in 25 appearances but could not win either La Liga or the Champions League as these went to Real Madrid and Chelsea respectively.

He has made less of an impact this season, scoring his first league goal only in February. His injuries have been a big factor and with the development of players like Cristain Tello and the recent revival of veteran forward David Villa, he has been used more and more sparingly.

This has affected his confidence and he has ultimately had a below par season, scoring just 2 league goals in 20 appearances. His form has led the Catalan club to consider his future and according to talkSPORT, he has been tipped to leave the Nou Camp in the summer.

Premier League clubs Liverpool and Arsenal both consider Sanchez a prized asset and are expected to inquire about the availability of the Chilean in the summer. Both clubs are set to have a significant transfer kitty to spend big in the summer to rejuvenate their squads for next season.

A man who knows Sanchez well is Udinese sporting director Fabrizio Larini and he feels Sanchez would be perfect at Arsenal due to their style of play. He said, “I do not know his current situation at the Spanish club. But his fitness problems have definitely limited his performances.”

He continued, “The only thing that these teams will have to consider is that he is a player who needs freedom to play his way. In teams that have particularly rigid patterns of play he might have a few problems. Sanchez needs to play the ball on the ground, just like Arsenal. That would be his ideal game.”

So it seems that Alexis Sanchez would fit right in to the Gunners’ style so let’s see if Wenger makes it happen. This is the type of transfer with a huge upside because he is a truly dynamic, world-class player but unfortunately the potential for major disappointment due to fitness concerns is hard to overlook. We shall see…
