Arteta Provides New Injury Update On Two Arsenal Stars Ahead Of Newcastle Clash

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says Gabriel’s fitness is a “big concern” after the centre-back was substituted in the 3-1 win over Chelsea.

The Brazilian international had an issue with his foot before having treatment. He then went down on two more occasions before he was eventually replaced by Rob Holding with five minutes remaining. Asked about the defender’s condition after the match on Tuesday night, Arteta said:

“He [Gabriel] tried for 10 to 15 minutes and he couldn’t carry on – a big concern.”

Gabriel could have done more damage by trying to play on so he is a major doubt for this weekend’s game against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

His absence will, therefore, place greater urgency on William Saliba returning to the fray but, when asked about the prospects of the Frenchman being fit for Sunday, Arteta said he was not sure.

Considering the centre-half has been out for the best part of seven weeks with a back problem, it’s probably asking a bit too much to expect him to be available for Newcastle, especially when he hasn’t even been seen in training this week.
