Arshavin, Denilson and Squillaci Leave Arsenal

Arsenal have confirmed that Andrey Arshavin, Denilson and Sebastien Squillaci will not be offered a new contract at the end of their current one, which expires on June 30th, a move which would help them save money which they would have spent on wages for their transfer moves this summer.

All three players let go by the club have been under pressure as their career at the club progressed. The loyal supporters of the club had raised their voices at some of the players during matches this season, and miss the ruthless winning spirit shown by the likes of Patrick Viera, Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and the other greats of the glorious era under Arsene Wenger.

Denilson, a hardworking midfielder, was a fan favorite when he joined the club back in 2006, when Wenger signed him for £3.4 million from Sao Paulo FC. The Brazilian had an impressive start to his career at the Emirates Stadium, but was cut short due to injuries, inconsistent performances, and most of all, emergence of new talent at the club. The likes of Jack Wilshere and Cesc Fabregas had stamped their authority on the Arsenal engine room, leaving no place for Denilson, who finally went back to Brazil on loan to Sao Paulo in 2011.

Arshavin was a striking talent brought in from Russia in the winter window of the 2008/2009 season. He was signed due to his impact in the national side, and made a good start to his career at London, and was a regular for two seasons, before he was sent on a half-year-loan back to Zenit St. Petersburg. With just 7 starts this season, the 32-year old will now look for a move possibly back to Zenit.

Squillaci was signed by Wenger in 2010, thought to be an experienced central defender, who had already represented five clubs in his career. However, besides the 22 appearances in his first season, the Frenchman has been left out for two seasons due to his poor performances, with many fans criticizing the signing of the player in the first place.

According to a statement released by the club, the trio was confirmed to be leaving the club at the end of their contract.

According to Metro the statement read, ‘Andrey Arshavin, Denilson and Sebastien Squillaci will leave the club when they come to the end of their contracts on June 30, and Arsenal would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their contribution and wish them well for the future.’.
