Arsene Wenger Should Be Supported And Allowed To Do His Job Shouldn’t He?

The fallout and debate surrounding the future of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger over recent weeks is reaching boiling point, with more fans than ever before calling for the Gunners legend to call it a day in north London.

Whilst it will certainly not be the whole fanbase that are calling for Wenger to walk away, they are the ones being heard at the moment. The ferocious reaction to the Champions League hammering in Munich on Wednesday night, was more volatile than the club has ever seen before and, going into his pre-FA Cup press conference on Friday, many would not have been surprised to see the Frenchman, who has been in the Arsenal hot seat for over two decades, announce his resignation.

However, there was no such announcement, just a reassurance that he and his squad were entirely focused on Monday night’s clash with Sutton United in the FA Cup fifth round.

Being realistic, it would have been very out of character for Wenger, who has dealt with this kind of scrutiny in the past, to have just upped and left on Friday morning. Despite the uproar in recent weeks it still remains very clear that the manager will be the one who decides on his future, not the board.

Whatever his decision, one thing is clear, Wenger will be in charge at The Emirates come the end of the season, his future beyond that is a concern for another day, in the meantime, fans, players and pundits must focus on the rest of the campaign.

Staying in the Champions League this season, with a 5-1 aggregate score to overturn, seems almost impossible, however, the Gunners can still make this season something to remember and, if it is to be Wenger’s last, it deserves to be.

Whatever the former Monaco boss does between now and his last day as the Arsenal manager, he will leave as the most successful in the club’s history and a legend, with a queue of designers waiting outside The Emirates to land the contract for his statue.
With that in mind, whatever your thoughts on the man concerning his current position, any Arsenal fan should be more than willing to give someone of such standing within their club the fit and proper send off. The events of the last few weeks will have made Wenger acutely aware of the zeitgeist amongst supports, therefore, to continue with the vicious protests will not help anyone.

The players and staff still have, regardless of what happens against Bayern Munich, an FA Cup and Premier League campaign to see out, which will not be helped by a toxic atmosphere in the stands.

It may feel like Groundhog Day for Gunners fans, however, over his 21 seasons at the club Wenger has more than earned the chance to leave in a dignified and celebrated manner. Thus if, as it looks to be, it is this season, every effort should be made by the fans to show the club hero exactly what he has meant to them over the past two decades as some may have forgotten how the manager resisted overtures from some of the games’ biggest clubs to stick with Arsenal when many managers might have gone for the money.
