Arsenal’s Financial Books Looking Good!

The Gunners have always been loyal to their financial approach, ever since they made their big money move to the Emirates Stadium on the back of taking a hefty bank loan. Their hands have been tied in the last few years when it came to spending money as they were channeling a large chunk of their income towards reducing their debt.

That was the reason Arsenal fans did not see a big money signing arrive at the club in recent seasons, as they were looking to clear out as much debt as possible at the earliest time. They have now reached a point where the debt is nearly paid off, and the club’s financial records look clean and green.

Another factor in their current hefty cash reserve of £153.5 million is the combined income from the sales of Robin van Persie to Manchester United and of Alex Song to Barcelona for nearly £47 million in the summer of 2012, which has put them in good stead.

They also had a massive exodus of fringe players this summer like Andrei Arshavin, Denilson, Sebastian Squilacci and Gervinho. ESPNFC reports that not only has this kept the club in profits for the year, they have also helped Arsenal lighten their wage bill tremendously, enabling them to channel their resources towards bringing in top quality players by offering them attractive pay packages.

That is exactly what they have done this summer with the record breaking £42.4 million signing of Mesut Ozil. That will reflect in next year’s financial records, but this massive expense is sure to be overtaken by the lucrative £150 million sponsorship deal with Emirates which is waiting in the wings for Arsenal next summer.

They look very solid financially, and their strong belief in self-sustainability has reaped dividends. With the club pumping in money at an alarming rate, do you see the Gunners challenging the likes of financial big-hitters like Chelsea and Manchester City in the coming years? Will they manage to lure more star players and indeed bring an end to that grueling wait for silverware?
