Arsenal’s club-record swoop for prime Man United target is a big sign of Wenger’s ambition

Arsenal are set to make major waves in the summer transfer window to prove their ambition ahead of next season, following a disappointing campaign where the Gunners finished fifth in the Premier League standings- outside of the Champions League spots for the first time in Arsene Wenger’s tenure.

FA Cup success last weekend has given Arsenal some success to look back on though and the Gunners are looking to make strides in the summer transfer window after securing Wenger to a fresh two-year deal; although there is still uncertainty concerning their key players.

Both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez continue to be linked with an exit, as they enter the final 12 months of their contracts, and it leaves Arsenal in a difficult scenario as they need to strengthen their squad with world-class additions as well as potentially replacing the duo.

Arsenal seem prepared to spend heavily in the close season though and reports from L’Equipe recently stated the Gunners have made an astonishing €100m (£87.1m) bid for Monaco ace Kylian Mbappe who has also been heavily mentioned as a serious target for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. The reported bid for Mbappe is in Paul Pogba territory which is more than double the Gunners’ current record fee; the £42.5m paid for Mesut Ozil in 2013.

Mbappe has set European alight this season with a sensational return of 26 goals across all competitions for the surprise Ligue 1 champions, who also enjoyed a thrilling run in the Champions League as they reached the semi-finals of the competition.

The services of the 18-year-old French starlet are now highly sought after and Arsenal’s move isn’t the first attempt we’ve heard of this summer, as previous reports indicated that both Real Madrid and Manchester City saw mammoth bids turned down from the French principality side. Unfortunately for Arsenal, it’s likely that Monaco will snub the advances of the Gunners this summer as they aim to keep the core of their squad intact- especially with Bernardo Silva having already left and the likes of Benjamin Mendy and Thomas Lemar attracting interest.

For Arsenal though, it’s a significant statement of intent that shows the North London giants are ready to go toe-to-toe with the big spenders in the Premier League- something that the Gunners have been reluctant to do in previous years.

During Arsene Wenger’s 21 years in charge so far, the French boss has spent around £700m- which isn’t a lot when you consider the amounts both Manchester clubs have spent in recent years and the fact that Arsenal spent close to £100m last season.

It’s now clear though that Arsenal need to spend to compete and the club have assured fans they’re ready to go all-out this summer, which means significant moves are necessary- and sealing Mbappe would be the perfect way to appease frustrated supporters.
