Arsenal Winger Leandro Trossard

Arsenal attacker Leandro Trossard recently signed a new contract at the club after a successful first two years.

Trossard signed for the Gunners in January 2023 for a fee of £20m after impressing heavily at Brighton, helping them to a Europa League spot in the 2023/24 season.

Since joining Arsenal, Trossard has made 83 appearances scoring 20 goals and 13 assists for the Gunners helping them to almost winning the Premier League title in the past two years against Manchester City.

The Belgian has been subject to transfer interest from the Saudi Pro League, however, he signed a new deal at Arsenal in November which will keep him at the Emirates until June 2027.

Trossard plays either on the right or left hand side comfortably and has featured for Arsenal this season in a front two alongside Kai Havertz up front, his versatility makes him a useful asset for Mikel Arteta.

Success in Belgium leading to a Premier League move

Trossard began his footballing career in 2010 when he joined the KRC Genk youth academy at the age of 16 which was his first step in becoming a real star in Belgium.

He then signed his first professional contract at Genk two years later aged 18 in 2012, making his first debut against Gent in May 2012 soon after he was promoted to the senior team.

However, despite not having to wait long for his first chance, Trossard was subject to several loan moves away in order to develop with the first being to Lommel United in 2013/14. He ended up making 12 appearances, scoring an impressive seven goals in that time.

The next season, he spent the year on loan at Westerlo where he made 17 appearances and scored three goals before returning to Lommel United the following season where he impressed again, scoring 16 goals in 30 games.

His final loan move came in 2015/16 at OH Leuven where he played in 30 games across the season. He was then given his big chance in the first team at Genk at the age of 22.

Trossard spent the next three seasons in the Genk team where he made a total of 120 appearaces, scoring 39 goals with 21 assists.

He led the team to a league title in the 2018/19 season which remains the only league title that Trossard has earnt in his career so far.

After the success for Genk, it was time for the Belgian to move on as he moved to Brighton for a fee of £13m, making him one of the most exciting signings in several years down at the Amex Stadium.

Trossard didn’t disappoint either as he scored on his debut in a game against West Ham United. In his first season for the Seagulls, the winger made 31 appearances in the Premier League, scoring five goals and three assists.

In his second season on the south coast, Trossard continued his good form, scoring five goals and five assists in 35 league games. In his final year and a half at Brighton, the winger scored 15 goals in 50 games in what was a period of form that convinced Arsenal to come in for his signature.

Trossard signed for the Gunners in the January transfer window in 2023 for a fee of £20m which many at the time hailed as a bargain for Mikel Arteta’s side who received one of the best wingers outside of the ‘big six’ clubs in the Premier League.

Three things you didn’t know about Leandro Trossard

Trossard didn’t take long to make a strong impact at Arsenal as in March 2023, he became the first player in Premier League history to deliver a hat-trick of assists in the first half of an away game. He also become the first player since ex-Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla to record a hat-trick of goals and a hat-trick of assists in the same season.

Furthermore, he created more history in November 2023 as he scored the 1000th goal at the Emirates Stadium in a 3-1 win against Burnley.

Trossard is known for being excellent with both his right and left foot, something that he admitted is all down to his grandad. He said in an interview for Arsenal’s website: “he was the one training me to use my left foot as well. He always used to say that if you want to be a top player, you need to develop both feet. He said you have to be two-footed and he helped me with that.”
