Arsenal have a shortlist of 7 targets heading into the January transfer window, according to The Mirror.
The English tabloid claims the Gunners have identified potential options in defence, midfield and attack as manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad for the second half of the season.
It is believed that the club have been keeping an eye on two fullbacks, Fiorentina’s Michael Kayode and Girona’s Miguel Gutierrez. Up front, the likes of Wolves’ Pedro Neto and Brentford’s Ivan Toney remain targets.
However, it looks as if Arsenal‘s top priority will be to reinforce the midfield. They have looked at Fulham’s Joao Palhinha, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz but there are doubts over whether the club can actually afford to sign any of the three players.
The Mirror report that the Gunners’ attention may therefore switch to a more attainable option: Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana.
Why are Arsenal interested in Fofana?
Manager Mikel Arteta is known to be a big fan of the France international, having been pictured in deep conversation with the player after Arsenal beat Monaco in the Emirates Cup final back in August.
Fofana’s contract situation also means that he will be available relatively cheaply. His current deal expires in 2025 and Monaco are said to be willing to sell him.
Does Fofana have other suitors?
The likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and West Ham have been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old but it was Manchester United that made the most concerted effort to recruit him last summer.
Erik ten Hag’s side offered a loan deal with an option to buy, which was rejected by Monaco. With the Red Devils having subsequently signed Sofyan Amrabat, it is not expected that they would compete with Arsenal for Fofana’s signature in January.
