Arsenal Told They Must Match £29M Asking Price After Gunners Make ‘Contact’ About Signing The New Dani Alves

Arsenal have been in touch with Flamengo about signing right-back Wesley, according to reports in the Brazilian media.

RTI Esporte claim that Gunners made “contact” this week to find out the conditions for securing the 21-year-old’s signature.

Flamengo are believed to have told Mikel Arteta’s side and other teams that Wesley won’t be let go for less than €35m (£29m).

The Brazilian club value the fullback very highly, having included a €200m (£168m) release clause in the contract he signed in July last year.

Wesley has plenty of suitors

RTI Esporte say that sources “close to” the player have told them that Liverpool have also made enquiries, which suggests that the Reds are considering him as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham have been keeping tabs on Wesley too, who has been compared to a young Dani Alves by some.

Arsenal are looking for a more attack-minded right-back

Manager Mikel Arteta is not exactly short of numbers on the right-hand side of defence. Jurrien Timber has done an admirable job this season. Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu may have had their injury problems, but both are more than capable of playing in that position as well.

However, Wesley would give the Gunners a different type of option. The Brazilian does like to get forward, although it is fair to say that he hasn’t translated it into goals and assists so far. In his 114 appearances for Flamengo, he has 6 goal contributions in total.

Considering that there are plenty of other areas of the first team squad that need to be strengthened first, it would be a surprise if the Gunners do devote nearly £30m to bring the young fullback to the Emirates this summer.
