Arsenal have not made any concrete attempt to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Reports in the Italian media claimed the Gunners had reignited their interest in the Nigerian but, writing in his Daily Briefing column, Romano said that this is not the case:
“There is nothing regarding Arsenal’s reported interest from what I know, and it’s also not about which team are the favourites to sign him, it’s about who can agree with Napoli and with the player.
“Let’s see what’s going to happen in the final days, but at the moment, it’s still quiet.”
What is the current situation with Osimhen?
The 25-year-old wants to leave Napoli and he hasn’t been involved in the Serie A side’s first two competitive games this season, having missed the penalty shootout win against Modena in the Coppa Italia, as well as the 3-0 defeat to Verona last weekend.
Napoli want at least €100m (£85m) for Osimhen, and the player is not willing to take a pay cut in order to facilitate a move away from Italy. He currently earns in excess of £200,000 a week.
One of Arsenal’s Premier League rivals have been in talks
Chelsea have held discussions with both Napoli and the striker’s entourage but, due to financial limitations, the Blues have said that they are only willing to sign him on loan, without an obligation to buy.
Osimhen is believed to be against such a move. He is holding out for a permanent switch which has meant that negotiations have ground to a halt. If his stance changes in the final days of the window then Arsenal and other teams may well consider making an approach. For now, there is no suggestion that a transfer to the Emirates is a realistic possibility.
