Arsenal In ‘The Hunt’ To Sign “Phenomenal” Striker After He Makes Shock Decision Over Chelsea Transfer

Arsenal have joined “the hunt” for Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, according to the Corriere Dello Sport.

The Italian newspaper claims that the Gunners are “long-time admirers” of the Nigerian international and they are believed to be ahead of London rivals Chelsea in the race for the player’s signature.

Reports in the UK had suggested that the Blues were the likeliest club to make a formal offer for Osimhen, with a part-exchange deal including Romelu Lukaku seen as a strong possibility.

However, the Corriere Dello Sport says that a transfer to Stamford Bridge “doesn’t seem to be the first choice” for the striker, who has been described as “phenomenal” by ex-Cagliari boss Walter Mazzarri in the past.

Do Arsenal have the money to buy Osimhen?

The 25-year-old has a €130m (£110m) release clause in his contract so, on the face of it, you would have to say that a move to the Emirates looks very unlikely.

It should be pointed out, though, that Napoli’s stance has changed somewhat. The Serie A club may be open to a loan deal, with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

That could make a deal possible for the Gunners, who need to be mindful of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules. As we saw with David Raya last summer, the club have agreed to similar arrangements previously.

Nketiah may have to be sold first

To make room for Osimhen, you would have to think that a striker would need to leave. Eddie Nketiah has already agreed personal terms with Marseille but there is still work to do on the transfer fee.

It is believed that the Ligue One side have tabled an offer in the region of £17m, but Arsenal are holding out for around £30m. That is a sizeable gap to bridge, but a compromise could still be found before August 30th.
