Romano Confirms Arsenal Have “Booked Medical Tests” As Club Close In On 2nd Summer Signing

Arsenal have “booked medical tests” for Tommy Setford ahead of his transfer from Ajax, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Writing on X, Romano said that the 18-year-old is “set” to seal a €1m (£840,000) move to the Emirates, with the goalkeeper having already agreed a four-year contract.

Setford is expected to link up with Arsenal’s development squad when he arrives, with the aim that he can progress quickly and become part of the first-team setup.

Although the teenager is an England Under 19 international, he has never played football in this country, having come through Ajax’s academy.

What do fans need to know about Setford?

He is one of two brothers who play in goal for Ajax, with his older sibling Charlie having already made his senior debut for the club’s Under 21s in the Dutch second tier.

Both Tommy and Charlie were born in the city of Haarlem to an English father, and both have opted to play for England at youth level so far. You can find out more about Tommy in our profile here.

Arsenal have yet to find a breakthrough in talks for a defender

Considering that the Gunners entered negotiations with Bologna about signing Riccardo Calafiori some time ago, many thought that the Italian international would have been the club’s second summer addition after David Raya.

However, the deal has seemingly stalled. Calafiori is keen to make the switch to London but it appears the move has hit the buffers due to a disagreement over the transfer fee.

Reports suggest that Bologna want €50m (£42m) to €55m (£46m) but Arsenal are seemingly reluctant to pay a sizeable amount upfront. There are also concerns about Calafiori’s injury history, which may have led to the Gunners becoming reticent about the transfer.
