Arsenal Star Could Return To Former Club FOR FREE Five Years After £45M Transfer

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is attracting interest from his former club Atletico Madrid.

The Ghanaian international moved to the Emirates from the La Liga side in 2020 after the Gunners triggered his €50m (£45m) release clause.

However, Partey is out of contract at the end of this season and, with no sign that he will be offered a new deal, Marca report that Atletico are keen to bring him back to Spain on a free transfer.

The Madrid-based publication claim that manager Diego Simeone has never truly replaced the 31-year-old since his departure and his familiarity with the Argentinian’s coaching methods means his return could suit all parties.

There is competition for Partey’s signature

Due to his availability on a free transfer and his excellent performances for Arsenal this campaign, the midfielder will be in demand this summer.

Marca claim that Partey “will not be short of offers”, although they do not mention any clubs by name, other than Atletico.

It is believed the Spanish side are keen to tie down their former player to a pre-contract agreement as soon as possible to head off a potential bidding war.

Why are Arsenal looking to offload the player?

Despite being a regular starter, Partey is now the wrong side of 30 and he is the club’s fifth highest earner on £200,000 a week.

With the Gunners keen to refresh their squad, it seems the Ghanaian is one of those who will be sacrificed. His departure would reduce the wage bill significantly and that money could be put towards the salary of a new signing.

It appears that Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is being lined up to replace Partey, even though some will argue that he is a very different player to the London club’s current No.5.
