Former Premier League defender Alan Hutton has said that Arsenal need to sign a striker in order to challenge with Liverpool for the league title.
The Gunners currently sit second in the Premier League, six points away from Liverpool, who also have a game in hand on Mikel Arteta‘s side.
They drew 2-2 to Aston Villa in their last match despite going 2-0 up after 55 minutes. Goals came from Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli for the Gunners before Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins helped Villa to equalise.
Arsenal have been linked with several top strikers during the January transfer window, but they are yet to sign one, despite the fact that Gabriel Jesus suffered an ACL injury which is set to keep him out for the remainder of the season.
Hutton is the latest to suggest that Arteta should sign a striker in order to challenge for the title with Arne Slot’s Liverpool. He told Casino Scout: “I genuinely don’t understand why they’ve not done it.
“I don’t know why they’ve not brought in a top striker. Maybe Arteta sees football differently from others. Maybe he thinks Kai Havertz is the answer. They’ve now got injuries in that forward line as well, so you would think that they would want to get someone.
“If they had a top striker, a Haaland, an Isak, somebody of that ilk, I think it would take them to the next level. To challenge with Liverpool, that could give you those extra points that you really need to close that gap.”
Arsenal learn asking price for Wolves striker Matheus Cunha
The Gunners have been linked with signing Wolves’ Matheus Cunha during the January transfer window. The Brazilian is yet to sign a new contract with the Midlands-based club, and so Arsenal are reportedly monitoring his situation.
However, in recent days, reports have emerged suggesting that Wolves have set an £80m price tag for Cunha, who could help to replace the injured Jesus.
Cunha has impressed for Wolves this season, scoring 10 goals in 21 matches for Vito Pereira’s side. Nottingham Forest are also said to be interested in signing the 25-year-old according to Sky Sports, meaning Arsenal could have further competition for his signature.
