EXCLUSIVE – Shaun Wright-Phillips Makes Bold Arsenal Striker Claim Amid Haaland Comparison

Former Premier League winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has said that Arsenal don’t need to sign a striker to win the title.

The Gunners beat Manchester City 5-1 in their last league game over the weekend, in what was a dominant performance by Mikel Arteta‘s side.

They have been rivalled by City for the Premier League over the past two seasons, but this year, Pep Guardiola’s side are nowhere to be seen in the title race.

During the January transfer window, Arteta said that he wanted to sign a striker, and the Gunners made a bid for Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins. Despite that, Shaun Wright-Phillips has said that he doesn’t think that Arsenal need a striker to win the league.

He told GoonerNews via BetVictor Casino: “Is it necessarily that they need a striker? I think in many ways people say you  always need a striker. They went toe to toe with City two years in a row without a  striker.

“I wouldn’t say necessarily a striker is  going to make them win the Premier League. I think if you look at other things like, for example, City’s situation, they’ve got the best pound for pound striker in the world [Erling Haaland] and they’re not sitting second so I just think it’s a matter of them [Arsenal] taking chances.”

Arsenal missed out on three striker targets in January

Despite Wright-Phillips’ comments, the Gunners targeted Watkins in the January window, although, they weren’t able to land the England international.

Arsenal also were linked with Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, but they didn’t make an offer for the Brazilian, who has now signed a deal set to keep him at Molineux until 2029.

Mathys Tel was another attacker that was rumoured over a move to the Emirates, but he signed with rivals Tottenham on transfer deadline day, after previously rejecting a move to Spurs just days earlier.
