REPORT: Arsenal Named As Club Interested In Striker With £87m Release Clause Alongside Tottenham, Nottingham Forest And Newcastle

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Porto striker Samu Aghehowa in the January transfer window.

The Gunners are in a superb position in the Premier League, they sit on top of the table, four points clear of Bournemouth in second place. Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 1-0 over the weekend, and with Man City and Liverpool losing, the Gunners are in a great position in the title race.

Heading into the January transfer window, Arsenal are potentially looking to sell players that are no longer in Mikel Arteta’s plans. One of those players is Gabriel Jesus, who has been injured since last January.

If the Gunners do sell Jesus, then they may decide to replace him with another striker who can challenge with Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz for the starting role in Arteta’s attack.

Arsenal ‘interested’ in Samu Aghehowa

According to a fresh report by Caught Offside, Arsenal are interested in Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, who has developed a fantastic reputation for himself in Portugal. He has scored five goals in seven games for Porto this season.

The Spanish striker has an £87m release clause in his contract, but could be available for cheaper than that if he wanted to leave. Tottenham are also named as an interested club as they are looking to replace Dominic Solanke in January.

Furthermore, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle are also reportedly interested in Aghehowa in January, which could create a bidding war. Arsenal would maybe need to act fast to both sell Jesus and sign Samu if they want to get the deal over the line.

Do the Gunners need another striker?

Gyokeres is the clear number one striker choice for Arteta, but behind him is Kai Havertz. The German international is not a traditional number nine, he is more of a number 10, and so if the Gunners were to sell Jesus, they could do with another target man.

Samu would be a fantastic investment for Arsenal, as he is only 21 years-old, and so could develop into a world class striker at the Emirates.

A deal in January could be difficult to get across the line, especially considering that Porto are challenging for both the Portuguese league, and also the Europa League, however, if the Gunners were prepared to pay his release clause then they could sign him.
